Weekly Stewardship Report: Small Church Communities
“Persevere in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving; at the same time, pray for us, too that God may open a door to us for the word, to speak of the mystery of Christ.” – Colossians 4:2-3
Prayer, too, is a form of stewardship. We are called to invest our time and be open to the voice of God. At Holy Spirit we are reminded to pray and pray often. We have been encouraged to pray using the Give Us This Day books, daily conversations with God connected to our routine activities, and even Meditation.
Over 20 years ago our community embraced prayer through Renew. Renew is based on small church communities within a parish made of 8-12 people who share their personal experience of the Lord’s work and will in their lives. These groups support one another to live the gospel in their daily lives by coming together to pray at least once a month.
Holy Spirit has at least five active Small Christian Communities that meet on their selected schedule be it Saturday mornings or Wednesday evenings. These communities break open the Word using a prayer guide, “Celebrating the Word”, while consistently supporting one another through many life and world events.
Holy Spirit is also home to three Scripture Study groups led by Mary Smith, Mary Kane and Elisa Baroni which meet on different days and times. These groups delve deeply into different books of the Bible while offering the group a chance for connection and support.
More recently, a Men’s Group has formed that meets early Wednesday mornings to pray and focus on a featured book, while two Women’s Faith Sharing groups meet on Tuesday mornings or Monday evenings.
In addition to these well established groups, we have recently added two Play & Pray Moms Groups that meet on Monday and Thursday mornings under the direction of Merry Reardon. These groups offer moms a chance to connect with each other as well as Jesus while their children have an opportunity to play.
If this type of stewardship appeals to you, you may be interested in forming your own group around something that is near and dear to you. We are considering starting a group for couples as well as a group for families of children with special needs.
