Village House Shelter Needs for May
The Village House Shelter began in January with nine overnight shelters and four warming or day centers. The members are diverse in faith traditions – Catholics, Episcopalians, Methodists, Evangelicals, and Jewish. Holy Spirit has lead this effort with Mike Ferrero as the Collaborative Director and Chris Metzger as the treasurer and parish rep.
Holy Spirit hosted the overnight shelter for the opening month of January and with 15 women for the majority of the month. Some were returning from last year’s winter shelter and some were new. Over 300 of you volunteered during January. Many of you have continued to volunteer at other faith communities as the shelter continues to rotate.
The women are thriving. Some have transitioned back to families or to better levels of housing. Others are getting help in finding employment. All have experienced some sense of stability and wellbeing in their lives. Sending them back to the streets would have been disastrous.
The month of May has been an open month for the proposed year-round shelter. We were actively recruiting, but had not found a new partner for May. Then last month the small community of St. Paul’s United Methodist, close to San Jose State, offered us the use of its facilities if our partner churches could staff it. (St. Paul intends to staff the shelter themselves during the month of October.)
To make the month of May a success, all our faith communities will come together to operate the overnight shelter. Various churches have taken on the lead roles, with Mike as the shelter director. So now we need you!
The St. Paul’s overnight shelter opens May 10th and will house the women until June 7th when it rotates to St. Julie Billiart. While we can provide volunteers for any of the spots, we are called to cover the week of May 24th-31st. Click here to sign up for St. Paul’s in May. There is a variety of ways to serve – overnights, meals, deliveries, etc. Your help will be much appreciated!
