Social Ministry Restructured…
Part One: New Leadership
2014-15 has brought a major overhaul of Social Ministry at Holy Spirit. Social Ministry coordinates the church’s outreach and mission programs serving the poor locally, nationally and internationally. While the program has grown significantly over the past few years, the changes being made this year represent an effort to increase the opportunity for all parishioners to minister to the poor and the needy.
Social Ministry is served by two distinct committees: the Operational Committee which includes representatives of the 20 committees and programs operated by the Parish, and the Strategic Planning Committee which is responsible for our vision and development and evaluation of new initiatives under the banner of Social Ministry. To strengthen our volunteer management for these committees, Sue Seibert was appointed chair of the Operational Committee and John McCarthy of the Strategic Planning Committee. Sue previously lead the Sacred Heart Community Services program for several years. John has headed the Nicaragua Alternative Gifts program and serves on the Parish Finance Committee.
Two of our largest ministries, Sacred Heart Community Service and the Nicaragua Mission, have new chairs. Due to the growth in the Sacred Heart ministry, it has been divided into two parts. Laurie Brant is serving as the Volunteer Coordinator and Elizabeth Ward was recently appointed as the new chair for the Sacred Heart Team, which is responsible for a variety of special activities at SHCS. Stephanie Kavanagh was appointed as the new chair for the Nicaragua Mission which includes our mission trips, Alternative Gifts, and Fiesta Dinner.
Social Ministry also includes strong staff support this year with Social Ministry Coordinator Mike Ferrero, Pastoral Assistant Penny Warne and Pastor Fr. Brendan McGuire. All of the changes and additions this year will provide a stronger core of leadership for the program.
