Village House will open its doors on January 4th. For the month of January, guests will be sheltered overnight at Holy Spirit and during the day the Episcopal Church of Almaden will provide a Daytime center. Parishioners who were involved last year remember the excitement and the energy the Holy Spirit breathed into the parish. New and old church members worked together and many friendships were formed. The parish received much more than was given from the experience.
Village House is a year-round haven for 15 women who are medically challenged. These women will be individually selected to be part of the group. There are eight churches participating. Each church will house the women for one month each. At Holy Spirit, the women will again be sleeping in the church. During the day, the women will go to the daytime center at Episcopal Church of Almaden, doctor and/or caseworker appointments, or visit with family members.
Descriptions of the volunteer openings:
Greeters: Volunteers will sign in the women as they arrive each night. The guests will shower and change into comfortable clothing and gather for dinner.
Laundry: Volunteers will pick up towels, sheets, etc. These will be laundered in the volunteers’ home and returned to Holy Spirit.
Meals: Dinner, breakfast and lunches will be served. All meals are prepared in the parishioners’ home and delivered to the Parish Office. Menus and recipes are provided. Each volunteer is responsible for only one item of the menu. Another group will serve the meals and clean up the kitchen. The women retire to the church and get ready for sleeping.
Overnight Team: During the night, there are at least three volunteers in the church. A medical volunteer, with EMT training or above, a woman, and another person make up this group. There are two over night shifts. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
Security: There will be several security teams on site to provide for safety of the school children, the guests, and the church property.
Please do not donate clothing for this year’s shelter! We are not operating a clothes closet this year. If you have clothing to donate for the homeless we suggest donating them to the clothes closet for the homeless operated by Transfiguration Church, 4325 Jarvis Ave, San Jose.
