Sacred Heart Pack a Back – Spaces Still Open for Distribution Day
It’s time for Pack-a-Back 2016! Over the past years, Holy Spirit parishioners have generously supported the Sacred Heart Pack a Back Program, which has had a huge impact on Bay Area children. The gift of a supply-filled backpack assures that disadvantaged children in our community begin school with the necessary supplies to engage in their learning and succeed in fulfilling their dreams.
Sacred Heart distributes over 2000 backpacks filled with grade appropriate school supplies every fall for children in need. It is quite an operation! There will be a supply drive in a few weeks asking for items to fill these backpacks, but now it is time to sign up to help register the customers, sort the supplies, fill the back packs and distribute them. If you like to be involved in “do good for others” projects, this is for you! Please don’t miss this wonderful chance to make a difference in the life of a child!
Sign-ups open Monday, June 27th at 9:00 a.m. for all volunteer opportunities. The days, times and descriptions are listed below. Please contact Paul and Stephanie Francois at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Registration Day – Friday, July 8th, 8:15-11:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Volunteers must be 16 years of age and up. 18 years and older preferred and bilingual is a plus. Parents of students from kindergarten through senior in high school will line up at Sacred Heart Community Service to register their children to receive a backpack. The parents will be given an appointment time to pick up the backpack in August. Volunteers are needed to make sure the parents have brought all the necessary paperwork with them. Some volunteers will be inside checking the information on the computers for accuracy. Other volunteers will be directing the lines to insure a smooth flow of customers. Click here to sign up
School Supplies Drive – July 16th-24th Bins will be available at various locations within the parish. A list of needed supplies will be published in the weeks ahead. Please bring unused school supplies and drop them at your convenience.
Sorting Day – Saturday, July 30th, 9:00-11:00 a.m. Volunteers age 7-12 MUST be with a parent. All of the supplies from the various donations will be sorted into categories. This will give the staff of Sacred Heart a quick look at what items will have to be purchased in order to fill the promised backpacks. This day is fun, chaotic, and just plain crazy! Packing Day – Saturday, August 6th, 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:00-4:00 p.m. Volunteers must be 9 years or older and all children age 9-13 must be with a parent. On packing day, various “assembly lines” pack grade appropriate materials into plastic bags. For example, one assembly line is packing kindergarten materials into bags while another assembly line is packing high school materials into plastic bags. It is amazing how smoothly the process works! Click here to sign up
Distribution Day – Friday, August 12th, 7:15-10:45 a.m. and 12:45-4:15 p.m. Volunteers MUST be 16 and up. Volunteers shopping with customers need to be 18 and over. Bilingual is helpful. This is a great day! The customers arrive with their children at the appointment time they were given on Registration Day. Appointment cards are verified by volunteers. The children are given the plastic bag with their grade appropriate supplies, and then they choose the backpack they want from the backpacks on the tables by age of the child or the ones hanging on the walls for the high school students. Volunteers are the ones who help the selection process. Click here to sign up
It is such a gift to witness the excitement and feel the energy!
