Our hearts and prayers are with the people of Haiti. We urge the U.S. government and people everywhere to stand in solidarity with our Haitian brothers and sisters by making sure they have everything they need to deal with the devastation brought by the recent earthquake. How can you help?
1. Pray for the people of Haiti and the relief workers who are assisting them.
2. Go to the Catholic Relief Services' website www.crs.org to get more information and make a contribution.
3. Call on the Obama administration to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haitians who are in the United States. Our friends at Catholics United have more information on this and a petition you can sign at www.catholics-united.org/haiti-petition. You also can call the White House at 202-456-1111.
Cardinal George, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and Archbishop Timothy Dolan, chair of CRS board, said the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that ravaged Haiti "destroyed countless homes, churches, seminaries, schools, and other buildings and has left millions without the most basic necessities of life. Our faith compels us to pray for and reach out to our brothers and sisters in their time of suffering."
