Collection for YMCA’s Summer Achievement Program – May 28th & 29th
Our second collection on May 28th and 29th will support the Summer Achievement program sponsored by the South Valley Family YMCA. This unique program benefits our neighbors living in and around the Hoffman/Via Monte neighborhood. While we are often called to support others across the nation and world, this is a wonderful opportunity to support a cause that benefits our neighbors in need.
This six week summer program at Almaden Elementary, a title 1 school, serves approximately 65 children over the summer. The children are led by credentialed teachers and Y staff, where they are engaged in activities to improve literacy, math and science skills , enhance character development and physical activity. As a bonus, the children receive two healthy meals and snacks each day.
This program has proven to turn around the loss of academic competency usually experienced during the summer by this population of children. The students lucky enough to participate in the Y’s Summer Achievement program actually improved their skill retention over the summer and were better prepared to start their next year of school. In past years, the Y has been able to serve 80+ students for nine weeks but has now been forced to cut back due to reduced funding. We have a chance to increase the number of children benefiting from this program with our support. The cost runs $250 per week per child. Help the Y answer its cause for Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social responsibility to benefit these children.
