Advent Angels – A Tradition Continues
With any holiday, we look forward to traditions of the season. Over the past 10+ years, Holy Spirit’s Advent Angels Program has become a continuing part of our community’s, and we hope your family’s, Advent tradition. Just last year, your overwhelming response, generosity and commitment to this tradition provided nearly 1100 toys to Sacred Heart Community Service’s Toy Box Program and to the families of Our Lady of Refuge. That tradition continues this year.
In keeping with our ever-growing partnership with Sacred Heart Community Service and their mission to “change lives and impact poverty by providing essential services, offering tools for self-sufficiency, and ministering with dignity, compassion and respect”, we will be collecting new, unwrapped toys to benefit SHCS’s Toy Box Program. On December 22-23, hundreds of families will visit the SHCS Toy Box, which will be stocked with toys donated by you and many others, to “shop” with dignity for the perfect gifts for their children. And, as we did last year, we will be sending some of the donated toys to Our Lady of Refuge for distribution to some of their needier families.
Advent Angels aren’t merely the paper angels that you take home as a reminder to bring back a donation. In recognizing the struggles of those around us, and taking the time to do what we can to help, we are each living as an “Angel” to someone. It may be your child who learns from your example of “it is in giving, that we receive”, or a needy child you may never see or know but has been overjoyed by your simple donation of a toy, or the mother or father who has the opportunity to wrap that gift for their child. We all have the opportunity to answer the call to be an Angel to someone – not just during Advent, but daily.
Beginning the weekend of November 29-30, simply select a paper Angel (located at the back of the Church or in the School Office), and go out with your family as “Advent Angels” to choose a toy or a game for a child of any age that otherwise might not have a gift to open on Christmas morning. Then, between December 6-14, please bring your new, unwrapped toy donations as part of your offertory during Masses or to the bins located at the School Office. We invite you to keep the Angel and share the prayer on it with your family as part of your Advent tradition this year.

Please allow the Spirit of the season to inspire you to be an Angel to someone this Advent and throughout the year. Merry Christmas and God Bless.
