Adopt a Missionary for Nicaragua
Amigos for Christ, our partner in Nicaragua, hosts over 1000 missionaries every year. To make this possible, they need long-term volunteer missionaries who are responsible for little logistic details that keep things running smoothly. These Servant Leaders work alongside Amigos for Christ staff to provide program support and spiritual guidance to the visiting week-long missionaries. Whether it’s leading the charge to make 100 perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwiches a day or cleaning bathrooms at the end of the day, they will be there to there to serve.
This year, six of our Holy Spirit young people have been selected from dozens of applicants to serve as Servant Leaders, to work 3—12 weeks of summer in Nicaragua.
One of last year’s applicants wrote: “Holy Spirit places an enormous importance upon service and leadership in the community and throughout the world. As a long-termer this summer, I will do my absolute best to continue that mission in all that I do.”
Another wrote: “Going to Nicaragua last year, I was new and unfamiliar as to what to expect. I never thought in a million years that I would fall in love with the country, the people and, most of all, the Amigos for Christ.”
While we are certainly proud of these young people, we also recognize the financial sacrifice for many of these families. The air fare is nearly $1000, not including the cost for room and board. In addition, these young parishioners are giving up the opportunity to earn money for their next school year. Last year, the Social Ministries committee established the Nicaragua Scholarship Fund to help with these financial burdens. Please support Nicaragua and our youth and “Adopt a Missionary”.
